Forklift Winches

Forklift Winch - Winches are mechanical devices which can pull up or wind out the tension of a wire rope, rope, wire cable or cable. These devices, in its most simple form, are constructed of a spool and a hand crank. More complicated winches are seen at the heart of machines like steam shovels, tow trucks and elevators. Every so often the spool can be referred to as the winch drum. Elaborate designs have gear assemblies that can be powered by pneumatic, internal, hydraulic or electric combustion drives. Some winches may comprise a mechanical brake or a solenoid brake or a pawl and ratchet device so as to prevent it from unwinding unless the pawl is retracted.

Usually, the rope is stored on the winch. There is similar piece of equipment referred to as a capstan which does not store the rope. In sailing, when a line is trimmed on a sailboat, the crew member operates the winch handle making use of one hand while tailing the other so as to maintain tension on the turns. Some winches have a cleat or stripper so as to maintain tension. These designs are known as "self-tailing" winches.

Quite often, a winch is utilized in huge theatrical shows as a part of the mechanism to transfer setting. Every now and then there are even winches actually imbedded in the stage to help move the various bigger set pieces on and off the stage.

Recently, winches have been fabricated in particular designs for snow and water sports. This new generation of winches is designed so as to pull riders rapidly across a body of snow or of water. This can stimulate a riding experience which is normally supplied by a wave runner, boat or a snow mobile.
